SEMC inaugurates EU-backed capacity building drive for young journalists

The Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC), in collaboration with the Yemen-based European Union’s Delegation, is set to inaugurate next Saturday a project on capacity building of young journalists in the field of modern media skills, said Mustafa Nasr, SEMC Chairman.

Nasr said that the drive is designed to upgrade media skills of over 150 young journalists, mainly media officers of youth blocs and coalitions, by helping them acquire skills of news editing, communication with mass media, and effective use of new media, namely face-book and twitter, to enable them address youth issues and voice their ambitions.

He made it clear that the project would involve four training courses focusing on journalistic values, including professionalism, impartial coverage and war and conflict coverage, in addition to helping young journalists, both males and females, acquire skills of photography, video production, and the way of utilizing them efficiently in new media.

For his part, Mr. Jan Marry, the EU’s Charge d Affaires,  asserted that the EU support for the project comes out of its commitment to help   youth develop their own capacities in order to contribute to building up Yemen during the next phase.

  Young media persons are to assume the onerous responsibility of shaping up a new culture for Yemen in the future, thus boosting entente and development efforts, he highlighted. 

The EU’s official further affirmed that the media, mainly modern media, play a key role in bringing about change and development.
