Handicrafts Workers Symposium in Sana’a

The Handicraft Symposium and Traditional Sana’ani Craft Exhibition were inaugurated today, in Sana’a, under the patronage of H.E. Saa’d ElDin Ali Salem Ben Taleb, Minister of Trade and Industry. The Symposium and the Exhibition are supported by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Economic Diversification Programme.

The Symposium was attended by more than 20 handicrafts workshops. They join related partners to discuss the workers issues and possible ways to improve work environment and productive competition.

The Symposium aims to discuss action priorities to support traditional handicrafts. It also aims to improve technical and professional skills and effective participation in the traditional business world in Sana’a to improve livelihoods of people dependent on traditional crafts.

At the Opening Ceremony, Ms. Randa Aboul-Hosn, UNDP Country Director, confirmed UNDP’s support to “Yemeni crafts workers who are spending great efforts to make a living and support their families. At the same time, they are preserving the cultural and historical products that reflect Yemeni unique heritage and culture which distinguish the history of the Yemeni people from the rest of the world.”

The contribution of UNDP to support this sector is one of key business tasks addressed by the Industry and Trade Project - Economic Diversification Programme.”, she added.

She also said: “one of the main objectives of this meeting is to gather all involved partners and everyone serving this sector, to discuss the best ways to improve the business environment in an integrated manner.”

The Exhibition of Yemeni Handicrafts Products that is organized with the Symposium serves as an incentive for workers in this business to showcase their products, marketing them, selling them, and raising the visitors’ awareness of Yemen’s rich heritage and craftsman tradition.

The Symposium was attended by Mr. Mohsen Ali Al Naqeeb, Vice Minister of Trade and Industry, officials from the ministry, UNDP, related bodies, and a crowed of interested people.
